To set a common base for our English proficiency course it is helpful to share a basic understanding of how we learn - for example English.

Please work through the synopsis below, use the dictionary if you encounter problems understanding something.

Then answer the questions at the bottom of the page.


Synapses are connectors between neurons. Neurons can be understood as information units. Info networks are established by running info through your brain:

- Info enters through your senses. The more senses you use the wider the network will be. Experience makes the expert...


- Repeated info means strengthening of connections (synapses) = learning! Again: Experts are people with lots of experience...


- Positive or negative emotions 'burn' info into your memory. (Happiness makes info available, fear and sadness push info into the subconscious.) We usually only try to do things repeatedly, that we enjoy or need for our future happiness.



The stronger the network the more secure and the better available the info you want to memorise.

Learning a language naturally means learning to communicate.

Communication entails: your intentions, people, setting / personal context, emotion, experience…

Every bit of info at any given moment is processed by your brain, fortunately mostly unconsciously. Relevant info (i.e. info that seems useful somehow, helpful to make you happier) is saved together as a micro-network. The better it is embedded into the entire network (i.e. your pre-existing knowledge), the stronger the memory is.


To learn a foreign language effectively you consequently need to emulate the natural learning process as far as possible!



- Try to create a 'happy' learning atmosphere and attitude. Find something helpful or interesting or entertaining. Only with a goal you know when you achieve.

- Communicate with real people!

- Use English in everyday contexts! Thereby connect English with things which are familiar to you.

- Practice English with materials that are meaningful to you, e.g. books, films, music etc.

- Make English part of your daily routines and thus make use of your sub-conscience.

- Use the same English content (i.e. repetition) in various contexts, thus broadening your network.



Tasks:

List opportunities where you may come in contact with English in your daily life.

Mark (or add) opportunities you routinely use for your learning.


Collect ideas how you (we) could emulate the natural acquisition of language in our classes.


Share and discuss with your group.



Start putting your ideas into practice today!

O actually no, it's so far! We have spent six wonderful weeks.

first Week: In the morning the pool Altleiningen rumräumen-dependent, cleaning up, eating ice cream

second Week: Sobi home in Gander - refreshing for the body (well - the food there ...), and soul!

third Week: Our caravan adventure begins. We are on the long trip to Portugal. Equipped to 154 radio plays, DVDs and films on the IPAD should offer the children the way good - we thought ... and really it went very well! In Portugal, we visited many relatives, there were Portuguese Delicacies in abundance. The enthusiasm was also shared ... Tiago hoped anew each time to find something he likes ....

equal to our arrival we got a sack of potatoes from Uncle Manuel and Aunt Alice, 5 liters of fresh-pressed olive oil, plus 3 pounds onions and garlic 1 kilo ... because one can not say "no" ...

So there was fried potatoes in our camping kitchen more often! Also nice!

We have bathed in the wild Atlantic Ocean and hung out in the sun, read, play, talk ....

After 2 weeks, we packed the desire to travel and we have our seven (actually siebenhundertsiebenundsiebzigtausend) wrapped up things at night and are set off by 12 clock to Spain. We were in the mood for something more stylish (...) sanitation than in Portugal, for example, we would have got toilets with toilet seats! Found Wanted! 15 hours later we arrived on the Mediterranean coast. And on a beautiful 5-star campsite. We wanted to stay here - it was soon clear, entertainment in the amphitheater, swimming in the lovely pool area, air-conditioned bars (not that we needed to ...) all in all a great camping!

Slowly but surely, we wanted to go home soon from there - Home sweet home attracted much!

So we are back safe and filled with many great impressions arrived in the most beautiful country in the world: Germany!

Now we are real (!) Looking forward to the day. Josie comes to school. Adrian starts with the 6th Class by - (!) I am quite willing to encourage him greatly. Tiago is preparing for the 4th to secondary school before. Most of the European countries backed the same climb they would have done in 1914, you know, the Austrian state with the Slovenians, that the Germans tended to back the Croats. The French and the British were pro-Serbian. It was pathetic. And as you remember, it went on for years. We had to just watch it happening.

HH: Yes.

CH: …how pulverizing of this society. And rape camps, scenes of people being stuffed onto trains for deportation, amazing stuff, until finally, the United States decided to intervene. And I thought now if the left can’t take a lesson from that, when will it? What would it take? And when the United States decided to intervene, and it put a stop to it, too. It not just put a stop to the mass murder and ethnic cleansing in Sarajevo and elsewhere, but it got rid, in the end, got rid of the Milosevic regime and restored Serbia to some form of democracy. If the left had had its way, Milosevic would have conquered and Annexed Kosovo, Bosnia and Croatia. And there would have been a greater Serbia built on the mass graves of the populations. All of them were against the intervention. I thought well now, this is not a difference of emphasis.
